Menard County Trails & Greenways

The Sangamon River is a little cleaner now thanks to the Menard County Trails and Greenways (MCTG) volunteers who spent yesterday morning cleaning up litter in and around the river near Hurie Park. About 10 volunteers picked up garbage, including tires, a rusty barrel, a boat seat, carpet, plastic bottles, and miscellaneous other river garbage. The garbage is a health and safety hazard for wildlife and humans alike. For example, tires can leach chemical into the river for the entirety of their lifespan. Let’s pitch in to keep the Sangamon River free of tires and other garbage. Every little bit helps.

Special thanks to Mayor Rick Snyder for disposing of the trash and Kerrigan’s Automotive (both of Petersburg) for generously offering to recycle the tires! Your efforts made our cleanup a success.
